For most of us, every time that we take a breath, it’s rare that we actually think about it. It’s simply something that naturally happens. And when it comes to the air that we breathe, unless we see smoke or there is a bad smell in the air, we don’t tend to think about the quality of it either. Yet did you know that according to a variety of published studies, in many homes, the air that we breathe is actually 2-5 times more polluted than the air that is outside? This is why it’s so important that we do all that we can in order to keep harmful contaminants out of the air that is inside of our houses.

Get some detectors. Pretty much every home has a smoke detector in it. But in order to make sure that you don’t have any carbon monoxide or radon gas leaking inside of your house (especially since both of them are colorless and odorless), it is a good idea to get detectors that are specifically made to detect those gases too.
Add some plants. Plants are great, not just because they can help to make the rooms in our homes appear warm and comfortable, but they also help to pull toxins from the air. Some of the ones that have a great reputation for doing so include the Aloe Vera, Spider plant, Snake plant, Golden pothos and Gerber Daisies.
Don’t leave your car idling in the garage. Something that a lot of people tend to inadvertently do is leave their car running on idle while they’re in the garage. The reason why this is not a good habit is that cars release carbon monoxide and with the car running, that provides the potential risk for getting carbon monoxide poisoning into your system.
Change your filters. Whether it’s a contractor, a cleaning company or even a firm like commercial design & engineering, one thing that they all will advise you do in order to keep the air quality in your home in good condition is to change the air filters inside of your HVAC unit. Typically, it’s best if you do this every 90 days.
Use homemade cleaning products. When we go to the store to pick up some cleaning products for our home, a lot of us do not realize that they tend to be loaded down with chemicals and toxins too. Ingredients like ammonia, triclosan and sodium hydroxide are all chemicals that can lead to health problems if you and your family are exposed to them a lot over a period of time. That’s why we feel that it’s much safer to make your own cleaning products with items that you probably already have in your kitchen’s pantry and bathroom shelves. Lemon juice, baking soda and white distilled vinegar are just a few things that can have your home looking spotless without infecting the air in the process.
